Canal Structure Operator (Seasonal)

The Canal Corporation (Canals) works in partnership with local, state, and federal entities to implement canal projects that meet the goals and objectives of the NYS Canal Recreationway Plan and the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Plan. The projects are geared towards increasing public access and use of the Canal System, adding new and improved trail linkages and enhancing tourism and economic revitalization opportunities along the 524 miles comprising the Canal system. The New York State Canal System, includes the Erie, Champlain, Oswego and Cayuga-Seneca canals, linking the Hudson River with the Great Lakes, the Finger Lakes and Lake Champlain. As a Canal Structure Operator, during an assigned shift, you would maintain and operate canal structures and equipment to permit passage of lock and lift bridge traffic and to regulate water level and flow. In addition, you would be responsible for checking for seepage and navigational hazards and for preventing trespassing and vandalism. You would also perform activities in support of the collection of user fees. This position requires frequent interaction with the general public. Canal operators cover a 24-hour day, seven days a week. Appointees can expect to be assigned to cover night and weekend shifts and are subject to 24 hour emergency call-outs. During the non-navigation season, appointees will perform preventative maintenance activities, work with a maintenance crew on canal pump-out projects, perform minor repairs to structures and buildings, and other tasks as assigned.

Salary Range:
From $16.59 to $16.59 Hourly
Minimum Qualification
Six months of experience in the operation and assembly or the operation and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, automotive, hydraulic, or diesel machinery OR Six months of experience working on a canal, of which 50% of your duties must have included working at a canal lock and/or lift bridge OR a certificate of completion from a BOCES or a post-high school program in electrical maintenance; electrical construction; or mechanical, hydraulic, automotive, or diesel repair or technology OR Six college semester credit hours in electrical construction; electrical maintenance; or in hydraulic, mechanical, automotive, or diesel repair or technology OR Possession of a New York State electrician's license and current registration. Must be at least 18 years of age and physically capable of performing the duties assigned to the position. Candidates must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in NYS at the time of appointment and continuously maintain it thereafter or face termination.Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
